(perceive more about Face Priority AF here.) The feature was introduced at this year's PMA show, and it works well, though it won't work in every profile situation, such as capturing someone in profile. With just a few improvements, though, this technology would literally be worth using in the future.
Another of the camera's impressive features, and one that worked quite well, was the panorama fuss mode. With each successive photo you take in your panorama, you get a sliver of the previous scene masked (at about 25 percent opacity) over your live portrait on the LCD screen. It's a remarkable way to take the guesswork out of the panorama process and help you line up your images perfectly.
One failure was the 2-inch LCD, specifically when and even 3-inch LCDs are becoming more common. That extra half-inch of LCD infinity can make a big tiff. The display worked well in radiant day, though, and the camera also includes a viewfinder.
According to the manufacturer, the artillery activity of the camera allows for relatively 220 shots with a isolated charge, based on the CIPA standard.
The day test portrait had very little uproar and fringing, though a warm, lightly orange cast somewhat skewed the color accuracy in the test ammunition. In terms of dynamic range, there appeared to be deep tones and good contrast without losing details in various shadow areas. And the Coolpix 7900 did a fine job of picking up the profound textures of our still-life model.
Flash coverage in our flash test image was first-class, with no areas blown out by the flash. Once also, we saw a very least amount of racket and fringing. The colors in the flash notion appeared a bit dark, due to underexposure, but saturation looked quite good. As with the day ammunition, the vital range was very good, capturing all the grays and a deep, rich threatening.
For a 7MP camera, the 7900 came in a little low in footing of determination, posting an average of 1,525 lines of resolution. The camera booted up in seconds, which was decent if a bit slow, but its recycle time was very good, clocking in at seconds. Testing revealed a lightly noticeable shutter lag; in Auto procedure, it failed to capture the action we wanted, which is certainly a complication. Distortion levels were normal for a compact camera. We found a little barrel distortion in the tolerant-outlook end of the fly range and no pincushion distortion in the telephoto end of the range.
The Coolpix 7900 and its 5MP twin, the Coolpix 5900, sustain some stupendous features, markedly for beginners. But they fall short of the Fujifilm FinePix E550, which is still our Editors' Choice for compact cameras, largely for its versatility and better image quality.
Compare the Coolpix 7900 and the Fujifilm FinePix E550 side by side in our comparison table, and compare their benchmark test results
